Buffer has a tail to tell about our visit to a trade show where we met all kinds of new DSL technologies, we hope you get our message ;-)

Buffer and I have just returned from a prominent ISDN trade show where we encountered new Internet Access services that will soon be available. He was absolutely overwhelmed by what we experienced. I must say that I was very impressed. While I made a checklist of various promising technologies, Buffer rambled on about what we had learned. He rattled, "Soon we can have fiber in the home with video on demand, and hyper channel access to broad band services..."

I went down my list, making notes...

Satellite Service: Shows great promise someday, but not today.

Fiber: When they start digging up my street to lay the stuff I'll get excited. Until then...

Buffer chattered on, "Terra Bit Data Rates, Fiber Channel, Opto Amplified ATM, Video Server, OC-3, Broad Band." I caught Buffer as he drew a breath. "Stop! Buffer! Just what exactly is OC-3?"

Buffer shrugged, "I don't know."

I nodded. "Yeah, all this stuff is just a lot of meaningless words to you and everyone else, and some people become very excited when they have absolutely no idea what a technology does, or how it works. Since technology is often open to your imagination, advertisers and other organizations take advantage of your lack of knowledge and suggest all kinds of nonsense like, virtual sex over the Internet."

Buffer's eyes got wide and his tail wagged. "What's sex?"

I looked away....

"It's kind of like eating, or going to Pittsburg. It's hard to explain with out actually having done it."
