ABOUT DSL's
FASTER DSL |
Many of the carriers, and communications technology pundits are talking about bypassing ISDN and moving directly to faster DSL services. Buffer has another story he would like to tell you about why trying to leapfrog ISDN to a faster DSL service may not be such a great idea. "Buffer, that's the biggest frog I have ever seen! Ok Buffer, where did you get him?" Buffer looked at me sheepishly. "Remember the Dolly II Chemistry Set you got me for Christmas? With the recombinant DNA option from Biogen." I began to feel a little queasy, with thoughts of a new genus of giant frogs wondering the planet. "Buffer, I asked, have you been performing medical experiments on the pond animals again?" I recalled the genetically altered euglena I'd caught Buffer with the week before. "But look," Buffer went on, "with this frog we're sure to win the Calavaras Jumping Frog Contest. At his size he can jump 100 feet! Easy." I knew how much winning this contest meant to little Buffer, and frankly I was curious at the thought of seeing how far our altered froggie really could jump. "Ok, Buffer, let's see what he can do." Buffer and I carried the frog out of the house and into the yard. "Ok, Buffer, your job is to keep track of this guy after he takes off. Let's see him jump!" We set the frog down and waited. "Perhaps he needs to be prompted," I suggested. Buffer cautiously pawed the giant frog, and after a minute or two of waiting I offered, "Well look, Buffer it really doesn't make any difference how big your frog is, if he doesn't jump. Let's go back to the available pond frogs that *do* jump, and see if we can find a winner." The moral of Buffer's little story is, there are many technologies out there that are faster then ISDN. Most of them like ADSL and HDSL/SDSL, have been in existence for years. The phone company is extremely slow to deploy these technologies because they are the phone company, and really don't give a darn. Will they ever jump? Who knows! <-- previous | page 2 | next --> |
