Voice Features

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

If your ISDN adapter will allow you to connect a regular telephone, called a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Set), you may be able to order your ISDN service and add Supplementary Voice Services. Supplementary Voice Services allow you to use your POTS phone at home to do some of the cool things you can do at the at the office. Buffer likes these features because it makes him feel like a real executive. Be sure your ISDN adapter supports these Supplementary Voice Services features before ordering them. Below are some of the features you can order with ISDN.

  1. Call Hold and Call Waiting Allows you to place an existing call on hold and accept additional calls."Buffer stop that! I do not want to be put on hold when I call you to see if you have cleaned your room".

  2. Call Conference Also used with the Call Hold feature. You may place an existing call on hold, then place another call and enjoin them together into a single call. Or alternately, enjoin a waiting/held call into an existing conversation.

  3. Call Drop the last added caller from a conference call.

  4. Call Transfer Transfer a caller to another number that you dial.

FAX Machines and Modems

If your ISDN adapter will allow you to connect a regular telephone, called a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Set), you should also be able to connect either a FAX machine or a modem. Buffer has both a FAX and a POTS phone connected to his ISDN adapter.

He then uses the two different phone numbers of the ISDN line to keep them separate. He gives one number out to FAX callers and uses the other phone number for voice communications. In [the name of the section instead of number] of this section Buffer and I discuss how his ISDN adapter automatically allocates bandwidth from his ISDN data calls to allow incoming and outgoing voice and FAX transmissions.
